CHICAGO (June 6, 2006) — Carfax announced Monday that the number of flood-damaged vehicles showing up for sale in Illinois has increased by 96 percent since 2002.

“These figures underscore just how important it is for consumers to find out all they can about a used car’s history,” explained Chris Basso, media relations manager for Carfax. “Flood-damaged cars are often dried out, repaired cosmetically and then moved to another state to be sold to unsuspecting consumers.

“Not only do consumers end up putting their money down the drain, but more importantly, they risk their safety,” he added, explaining that flood water can cause major damage to vehicle engines, braking and electrical systems.

Carfax said it is offering free Carfax Flood Checks at www.carfax.com/flood, to used car buyers and owners to help them in avoiding purchasing flood-damaged vehicles.
